Berea Update for October 9, 2026
Happy Friday, Berea family! I happened upon a rather unsettling news story out of Arizona recently that ought to give any thinking Christian pause. A family involved in a criminal trial used artificial intelligence to create a lifelike video avatar of a murdered man. They allowed a digital image to "speak" from beyond the grave and deliver a victim impact statement in court. And what makes the story so terribly troubling is that the judge actually allowed it.
When you ponder a story like that for a moment, the weight of our cultural hour becomes painfully clear. We have not merely flirted with the artificial; our institutions have formally welcomed it into the halls of justice. We have stumbled into a hyper-technological age where the line between what is genuine and what is fake is not merely blurred, but actively erased with official approval. We inhabit a world of digital shadows, illusions, and performative posturing. Our culture excels at manufacturing counterfeits. It can synthesize a voice, fabricate a face, and re-engineer a persona in seconds. But in doing so, it has traded the heavy weight of real life for a hollow handful of pixels. This digital world promises endless connection, yet its true fruit is a devastating epidemic of isolation. Thousands can "follow" a man online while no one knows his name when he is bleeding. You can build a vast digital audience from the comfort of your armchair, yet sit in utter loneliness when the lights go down. Digital avatars cannot hold your hand in an intensive care unit; algorithms cannot pray over your prodigal child; artificial intelligence cannot weep with those who weep or rejoice with those who rejoice. Synthetic reality is a cheap, starving substitute for a human soul made in the image of the living God.
In a culture drowning in fake noise, legal confusion, and shifting fads, where do we anchor our souls? Where is the rock that does not give way? We return, as we must, to the sovereign God and His unshakeable Word. God is not a digital construct. He does not shift with the prevailing cultural wind, nor does He adapt His truth to suit the tastes of a fleeting generation. His righteousness is absolute, His grace is real, and His promises are rock-solid. When the foundations of a confused culture turn to quicksand, the Word of the Lord stands fast forever.
And this brings us directly to the urgent necessity of the local church. We do not gather on Lord’s Day mornings to watch a performance, run through a dry religious routine, or dress up in fake masks. Far from it! We gather because the soul craves the real thing. We come hungry for unvarnished biblical truth, robust corporate praise, honest prayer, and the physical, blood-bought fellowship of real brothers and sisters walking shoulder-to-shoulder through a broken world. When we cross the threshold of Berea Bible Church, we step out of the artificial theater of the age and into the reality of the Kingdom. Here, you are not an anonymous viewer behind a screen; you are a living member of a covenant family. Here, we break real bread, carry real burdens, confess real sins, and celebrate real grace. The local church is not a human invention or an optional social club; it is Christ’s masterwork for human flourishing. This is precisely why our current series, Blueprint: God's Vision for the Church, is so critical for us in this day and age.
As we prepare for this coming Lord's Day, we will examine how the Master Architect fits each distinct, hand-selected member into His living temple. In a culture that isolates image-bearers behind glowing glass, Jesus calls us to assemble, lock arms, and be equipped for His sovereign mission. We need one another far more than our self-sufficient culture dares to admit. No Christian was ever designed to survive as a solitary hermit—least of all in a world as crazy as ours. When one member suffers, the whole body feels the pain; when one member is honored, the whole body shares the joy. Let us reject the thin, fake counterfeits of our day and throw our full weight into the authentic, vibrant fellowship that Christ has purchased with His own blood.
Keep pressing on!

Ways You Can Pray This Week
1. Pray for all of our children, teens, and college aged students this week!
***Please know that there are many individuals who need prayer this week due to health concerns and other events going on in their lives. Out of sensitivity to each individual's situation, these requests may not appear in this weekly blog. We have a "Prayer Team" at the church who receives more detailed information, and commits to praying for individuals in our church family.
This Week's Devotions
Day 1: Anchored Against the Waves of Confusion
Ephesians 4:14–15 (ESV) — "...so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ..."
Children are easily tricked by illusions, but spiritually mature believers are anchored to divine truth. Paul warns that worldly culture is driven by human cunning and deceptive ideas designed to sweep unstable minds off their feet. God anchors us through the clear proclamation of Scripture and the steady support of the local church so that we may stand unshakeable, speak truth with genuine love, and grow into the likeness of Christ.
Reflection Question: What secular assumption or cultural trend do you need to test against the light of God's Word today?
Day 2: Unashamed in a Confused Generation
Romans 1:16 (ESV) — "For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek."
When the surrounding culture slides into moral chaos, the temptation for the church is to retreat into a quiet, defensive shell. But Paul reminds us that the gospel is not a weak human opinion that needs to apologize for itself—it is the literal, sovereign power of God to rescue lost souls! Standing with uncompromised, joyful conviction in the gospel provides the only true light to a world stumbling in the dark.
Reflection Question: Where in your daily life—whether at work, among neighbors, or within your family—do you need to ask God for courage to stand unashamed for the truth?
Day 3: The Danger of Isolation
Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 (ESV) — "Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up!"
Solomon lays down an undeniable fact of human existence: isolation is a spiritual trap. When a believer tries to walk the trail alone, a single slip or unexpected trial can prove disastrous. God has built His church so that we walk in real relationship with others, ensuring that when the road gets steep, a brother or sister is standing nearby to pull us back to our feet.
Reflection Question: Who in your church family might be slipping into isolation, and how can you reach out to them this week?
Day 4: Guarding True Fellowship
1 John 1:6–7 (ESV) — "If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin."
Authentic Christian fellowship cannot survive in the shadows of hidden sin or fake religious performance. Walking in the light requires transparent honesty before God and sincere openness with our brothers and sisters in Christ. When we lay down our masks and walk in truth, the Holy Spirit knits our hearts together and applies the cleansing blood of Christ to our lives.
Reflection Question: Is there an area of hidden struggle or pretense that you need to bring into the light through honest prayer today?
Day 5: Standing Firm in One Spirit
Philippians 1:27 (ESV) — "Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ... that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel..."
Paul uses the rugged image of an ancient battle line: believers are called to stand shoulder-to-shoulder, striving side-by-side as a single unit. A divided or fractured church is easily broken by the enemy. But when a congregation lays aside personal pride and locks arms in shared conviction, their unity becomes a powerful testimony to the truth of the gospel.
Reflection Question: How can you actively promote peace and unity when minor misunderstandings or personal preferences threaten to cause friction?
Day 6: Equipped for Every Good Work
2 Timothy 3:16–17 (ESV) — "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."
In a culture where human wisdom shifts like sand, the Scriptures remain the breathed-out, infallible Word of Almighty God. The Lord has not left His people to wander in guesswork; He has given us His complete Word to instruct our minds, correct our errors, and train us in righteousness. Immersing ourselves in the Bible equips us thoroughly for every trial and duty.
Reflection Question: What practical changes can you make to ensure that daily Bible study takes priority over the noise of media this week?
Day 7: The Unshakeable Kingdom
Hebrews 12:28 (ESV) — "Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe..."
Human empires, political movements, and cultural trends will all eventually crumble into dust. Yet the Kingdom of Jesus Christ remains entirely unshakeable! Regardless of how dark or absurd the daily headlines become, our eternal hope is anchored to the Lord who reigns supreme over heaven and earth. Resting in His sovereignty fills our hearts with deep gratitude, quiet strength, and holy awe.
Reflection Question: How does fixing your eyes on Christ's unshakeable Kingdom steady your heart when world events feel chaotic?
Kids (and Kids at Heart) Korner
Memory Verse of the Week: Ecclesiastes 4:10 (ESV) — "For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow."
Have you ever seen a magic trick where someone makes an object look like it's floating in the air, but it's really just a trick with mirrors or invisible strings? Sometimes things in the world try to look real, but they're just pretend.
In a world full of pretend things, God gives us something totally REAL: God's Word is Real Truth: The Bible never lies, never changes, and always tells us the truth about how much God loves us! God's Family is Real Community: God didn't want us to try to follow Him all by ourselves. He gave us our church family so we can have real friends who pray for us, encourage us, and help us when we stumble! Just like players on a basketball or soccer team need every teammate on the field to play the game, we need everyone in our church family! We are better, stronger, and happier when we follow Jesus together!
Ask Your Family This Week: Why is it better to play on a team with friends than to try to play a game all by yourself? What is one way our church family helps us stay strong when life gets tough?
Fun Family Activity: The "Three-Legged Race" Lesson
Tie two family members' ankles together with a soft towel or bandana to do a short "three-legged race" across the living room or yard! Talk about how you have to match your steps, talk to each other, and work together to cross the finish line. Remind your kids that following Jesus is a team effort in God's family!
Have a great weekend! See you Sunday!
