July 27, 2021 - Acts 13:42-52
I have had the privilege to be involved in some moments when God was clearly demonstrating His power as He led people to walk to the front of the church for salvation and dedication of their lives for service. Prayer needs were being answered daily and it was an exciting time as lives were impacted.
Paul had proclaimed a powerful message to the synagogue presenting the claim of Jesus as the Messiah. The attendees had heard and resonated, particularly the Gentiles, with the implication that forgiveness was available to all who received Christ. Throughout the week there were conversations and follow up instructions about the teaching that had been given in the synagogue. This resulted in a large crowd coming together to hear the word of God the following Sabbath.
It is here that the conflict became evident as the Jewish leadership was suddenly filled with envy over the response that Paul’s message received (v.45). What could have been a benefit to all and a unifying element in the life of the city, suddenly becomes a tense battle two competing factions. The cause of this division into two companies is given to us in the text. Luke as he is writing states four times (vv.44,46,48, & 49) a phrase that ultimately defines and divides the situation. The phrase is “the word of God”. Paul and Barnabas’ ability to teach and proclaim the word of God effectively created life changing results in individuals around the region (v.49). The acceptance or rejection of the word of God became the defining element of this controversy.
Paul and Barnabas were expelled but the word of God and the new believers remained to continue the growth of the church. The excitement and passion of serving the Lord led these believers to endure persecution and the expulsion of Paul and Barnabas.
The movement of God often leads to tough decisions being made in individuals lives. Jesus told us that following Him would require loving Him more than family, friends, occupation and even life itself (Luke 14:26). The word and work of God will be divisive as decisions are made to believe and follow the Lord. May we like Paul, Barnabas, and the new believers in Antioch proclaim the truth of God’s word to our friends and family. Let us look with expectation what God will do through us as we live out His word this week!
