August 3, 2021 - Acts 15:30-41

We have always enjoyed traveling and seeing new places. The excitement of traveling and the expectancy of seeing and doing new events brings anticipation. Yet in the preparation for the trip there can be anxiety and misunderstandings as plans are laid out. Sometimes that tension and fatigue can lead to conflict.

Paul and Barnabas had been partners in ministry for some time. They both served in the local church in Antioch and as travelers together during the first missionary trip. After being in Antioch for some time, Paul desired to return to the cities they had previously visited and check on the believers they had left behind (v.36). In selecting the team that would accompany them, it soon became apparent that there was going to be some conflict. Barnabas wanted to include his cousin John Mark on the team and Paul strongly disagreed. John had left the first team and returned to Jerusalem (13:13) which caused Paul to doubt his abilities for this second trip. This, as well as possibly other factors, led the men to separate and form two teams. Each team went in different directions. Barnabas sailed to Cyprus and Paul traveled overland, both intent on strengthening the churches and evangelizing.

Tension and conflict can lead to changes in plans but it does not have to hinder or stop the ministry God calls us to accomplish. Reconciliation was accomplished as the church at Antioch sent both teams out to do God’s work in different locations. Strong leadership led to sharp and direct conversations and ultimately different ministry locations. This was used by the Lord to further the gospel ministry and later we see all parties working together for the Lord.

Having strong convictions and speaking your heart in ministry can be confrontational and difficult. If it is done with the desire to bring glory to the Lord and not selfish motivation, then the Lord can use all parties to further His work. If you are currently or potentially confronting a tense situation or conversation, spend time making sure your heart and attitude is in alignment with the Lord. You may share your thoughts with conviction but allow the other party to do the same. If like Paul and Barnabas unity is not achieved, then recognize how God is leading both and move forward. Paul later wrote to the Romans, “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” (12:18).

With an expectant hope,

Pastor Miller
