January 11. 2022 - Job 14-16
Being left behind and abandoned is a scary event. Whether it is for a short time or extended it can be terrifying! Celebrating my graduation from Moody Bible Institute we went to a pizza restaurant in downtown Chicago. Our family is from Western New York and Chicago is a huge city for a first-time visitor. The family finished the pizza and walked out of the restaurant leaving a sister-in law behind. Even as an adult she was not happy to be abandoned and left behind.
Job felt the burden of not being heard and sensing that everyone, including the Lord, had abandoned him. A tree may have the opportunity to be restored and to grow again from its roots, but man does not have that option (Job 14:7-10)!
Job's friend brings an accusation of acting foolishly, speaking madness, and not trusting God as he should. These statements of judgment caused Job to ask more questions and to challenge the rationale of his friends.
Friends and associates can be benevolent and encouraging when events are successful but also cruel and insensitive in difficult times. As we face adversity, remember Job's friends callous remarks and the silence of God. Though they are two very different issues, when combined, they can create a great deal of uncertainty in our walk with the Lord!
Job was confident in his position with the Lord despite the accusations and overwhelming stillness of God. Job's innocence is declared, and he is ready to defend it before God. It is so comforting to know that we have a mediator today who intercedes on behalf of us and defends our case (1 John 2:1-2). Give Him praise today for His marvelous intercession!
With an Expectant Hope,
