It is always amazing to me when I watch little children and the way they behave as they learn how far they can go before parents are willing to discipline them. Parents will often put a limit on how far a child can go or where they are allowed to play. Almost every child will test those limits to see if the parent is serious. They will step right to the line and look back, wait a moment, and then tentatively reach or step out over that line. If nothing happens, they run and play but if there is a consequence they jump back across the line.
Lot reminds me of a spoiled child by moving to the Las Vegas or Atlantic City resort of his time and indulged in the fast and pleasurable life without regards to the wickedness that surrounded him. Although he worshipped God and apparently had a relationship with God, he did not practice it before his children.
Abraham had a close relationship with God but failed to trust Him when it came to living in a foreign land. He placed his wife in a compromising position and almost destroys a nation by his inability to live for his God before the king!
We are a lot like children at times when we hear the command of God and then seem to go right to the line to look across and wonder, is God serious about His command or perhaps He is not currently looking. Perhaps it would be good for us to remember what the Apostle Paul said, "Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap" (Galatians 6:7).
