Daily Hope

July 6, 2021 - Acts 6:8 - 7:58

I have never been arrested for sharing or preaching about the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I have always had the freedom to proclaim the message of the Scriptures and present the hope of salvation. The one time that I was requested to not share or preach was when I traveled to China. When I applied for my visa, it was required to sign a written document stating I would not share the gospel.

The work of the gospel was proceeding quickly around Jerusalem and the church was growing at an exponential rate. The apostles had earlier requested and received assistance by appointing deacons which enabled the gospel message to reach even the priests in the Temple. One of the deacons, Stephen, being full of grace and power (v.8) spoke with such fervency that some in the synagogue of the Freedmen disputed with him. After seizing him and bringing him before the council, they accused him of speaking against the temple and the customs of Moses (vv. 13-14).

Viewing the countenance of Stephen's face, the high priest asked a simple question and Stephen responds with a historical message that fit the context of the moment. His message centered on the account of the Jewish nation and the life of Moses. This review of the nation was acceptable until he went from historical fact to indictment and accused the listeners of being like their forefathers. Stephen publicly stated that just as their forefathers persecuted the former prophets, so this present generation was guilty of killing Christ.

As we present Christ to individuals, often, they will be polite and listen to the historical facts and even enjoy the recounting of the past. It is when we touch upon the facts of guilt and sin in their present lives that people will reject, become aggressive and seek retribution. This week as you have opportunity to witness of your relationship with Jesus, be mindful that people are watching, listening, and maybe even considering the truths you are sharing. Also be attentive to the fact when confronted about moral or ethical issues, they will probably respond negatively. Like Stephen, be prepared for the challenge to follow Christ.
