When the Summer Olympics are being shown, I will sometimes watch the weightlifting competition and marvel at the strength and abilities of those athletes as they compete for the gold medal. The power that they have in their bodies to lift and maintain that weight for the required timeframe is simply amazing.

God allowed power to be demonstrated through the apostles and the amazement on the part of the crowd was evident as they were fearful even to join the apostles (v.13). This power was not their own but one that God manifested to allow the message to be proclaimed. As the apostles heralded the message of Christ’s resurrection and His exalted position with God, people esteemed them and received the message of salvation.

Both physical and spiritual needs were being addressed in such a way that everyone who came was being touched by the power of God. This resulted in multitudes from surrounding cities bringing the sick and tormented to the apostles (v.16). It was a time of spiritual revival and great openness of heart by the crowds to hear of God’s plan and concern for all people.

As God worked in powerful ways, the city responded by first flocking to see the miracles done and then desired to have their own needs met. These individuals were truly needy and sensitive to God’s work as they recognized their physical ailments had not been met by standard medical or human abilities. Subsequently, they also recognized their spiritual hunger and came to Christ. In contrast, some individuals came to observe and then suppress and thwart the ministry. The high priest and the religious leaders were the catalysts that emerged and sought to end the powerful ministry of God.

A phrase I have read and used is, “God’s work done in God’s ways will not lack God’s supply!” As the signs and wonders were manifested, even the sudden removal of the men leading could not stop the power of the Lord. Prison doors were opened by angelic beings and the command to “go, stand and, speak to the people” (v.20) was given.

When God is at work and His power is present, nothing can stop His plan. False accusations and detention of leaders will not hinder Jesus Christ’s redemptive power. This simple activity of obedient disciples proclaiming a message of the resurrected Christ continues to be the way God works today.

God desires for us to tell the story of Jesus and His power and what He has done for us. It could change the course of the community you are a part of as God uses His word and you, as His servant, today!
