How much time do we as believers spend in prayer? That is a question I often ask myself as I go throughout the day. As I read, study, talk and seek to serve the Lord each day, what amount is spent in prayer? 1 Thessalonians 5:17 is a simple verse consisting of three words; “pray without ceasing”. How close does my prayer life mirror this verse?

Peter and the disciples were amidst persecution and difficult times as the new teaching of Jesus Christ began to impact the city of Jerusalem. The religious leaders had warned them to cease their teaching and preaching in Christ’s name. These authorities were the same ones who had crucified Christ and the disciples recognized their power to fulfill these threats were credible!

Being released, they returned to their companions and reported the authorities’ threats (v.23). Then they began to pray, and a short portion of the prayer is recorded for our consideration. It is not important who stated the words, but what was critical is the point that the disciples prayed scripture back to the Lord!

The disciples understood that this was not a new phenomenon but that the kings and rulers of the earth have always raged, plotted and gathered against God (Psalm 2). Therefore, in perspective, the disciples were to expect this reaction from the people of the world. In addition, the disciples then requested that the Lord grant their requests and give boldness to them rather than fear.

This request was not to remove the difficulties or to protect the disciples but instead, it was to enable them to continue the work Christ had for them. Their prayer was to speak boldly and subsequently empower them to accept the consequences that came from the ungodly rulers. Their prayer was answered immediately with visible signs of power and boldness.

As we reflect upon our own prayer life, consider praying a portion of the word back to the Lord. He loves to see His children know His word well enough to repeat His words back to Him. Do not pray for comfort or prosperity but that the Lord’s work would be accomplished through obedience and boldness.
